Perspective

One of thing things that helps me through life is perspective. I've found that for me it's best to not get too caught up in my emotions and my life. After a while I lose perspective completely and become lost. When I'm lost I am dependent on the world instead of myself for my outlook and emotional state. I believe that it's better to depend on your self. Some find that hard to understand and even harder to do.
One way I try to maintain this perspective is to view myself as the main character in my own TV show. When good things happen to me I feel happy and I also feel happy for myself. I try to be my own audience. When bad things happen, I feel sad and I also try to feel sad for myself.
I recall stories, movies, and books where things happen to a particular character and then think about how their lives moved on. They learn from the bad times and enjoy the good times. No matter how bad things get, I know the story will move on and things will get better. Just like on TV. I think of my own life as one continuous story. Remembering what I've been through and recalling how I did it, boosts my confidence. Surviving these experiences gives me strength, just like any other hero.
It also helps me to think of others as being in their own story. Sometimes, people forget to share the screen. They are the drama queens and egomaniacs of life. There isn't much you can do except remember who's the most important character in YOUR story. If you allow yourself to play a guest role in someone's life, the rewards are can be great. When you give up the lead, people will love you for it.

Maturity

The state of 'being' mature is hard to define. When I say someone is mature, I mean to say they seem experienced with life. Mature people have good perspective and judgment. In a sense they are the buoy in a storm. They can get thrashed around, but they remain pretty stable.
Mature people are also self confident. It might not occur to most that maturity requires self confidence, but it does. I believe one of the reasons that mature people can remain so stable is that they know themselves and can draw strength from within. This confidence comes from experience and personal development. Maturity is something I always look for, and cherish, in other people.

Religion

My religious beliefs are pretty simple. I don't believe in most of the things in the major religions. I believe they are possible, but I don't have faith in them. Many of the things in their books probably happened, but they are a mythos just like any other. If you really want to understand my religious beliefs then have a look at Conversations with God. The book's point of view makes a lot of sense to me and I have faith in it. I don't necessarily believe the experience the guy talks about, but what God told him makes sense to me.

Karma

I believe in Karma or at least part of it. I believe that things you do, good and bad, come back to you. I had an experience where I was behind an elderly woman in line at a supermarket and she was short just over $1.60 for her purchase. She clearly wasn't poor, but didn't have any more cash with her, nor did she have her credit cards. I gave her $2 so she would not have to remove any of her items. She protested that it was too kind, but I insisted. She thanked me profusely and that was that. A few weeks later, at the same supermarket, I was buying some items late at night. I walked up to pay for my sale and the lady behind me said I dropped something. She handed me the $2 she picked up off the floor. I insisted it wasn't mine. It wasn't possible for it to have fallen out of any of my pockets. She insisted it was mine, so I took it. Later on my way out I realized the connection. Since then, I've been a believer in Karma. Even if it's not real, it's a very nice way to live your life.

Astrology

I find astrology interesting. Regardless of whether I believe in it or not, I am a stereotypical Taurus. I have had my 'full on' horoscope wheel done and I am a 'triple' Taurus. This means that I am Taurus Sun (your inner essence), Taurus Moon (emotions), and Taurus Rising (the side of yourself you show the world). I am also the Bull in a few others, like Taurus Mercury, Venus, and a few others I cannot remember. Someone who knows a lot about astrology knows this is very rare and means I am pretty much "what you see is what you get".
Tauri are practical, physical sensation loving, stubborn/persevering, friendly and slow to anger. We like to get what we expect and be expecting what we get. Bulls are, unfortunately, not big fans of change or surprises. We are cautious and always look before we leap. We don't break promises and (somewhat idealistically, I suppose) expect others to behave the same way. Break a promise to a Bull and you've got some major explaining to do.
Whether or not I 'believe' in astrology, I find it accurate more often than not and I seem to fit the profile for someone born under my stars.

My Tattoo

The Bear
I chose the bear because of the Native American mythos behind the bear image. The Bear is a symbol of strength, death, and change. Whilethese sound morbid and foreboding, they are actually not meant to be scary. Change is neither good nor bad, death is just a change in the state of being, and everybody needs strength.

The Bull
The Bull is a personal symbol for myself. It represents the characteristics of the Zodiac sign of Taurus; Strength, Persistence, Love of Physical comfort, and Warmth, among others. Whether or not you put any stock in Astrology, I embody most of the stereotypical traits of the Taurus. Also, in ancient Western mythology the Bull represents fertility and creation. In a way, the Bull's creation/life is the Ying to the Bear's destruction/change/death Yang.

Kanji
I've always found the Chinese characters very intriguing. To me they are somewhat timeless symbols that will transcend the concept of a 'trendy' tattoo.

Location
In a way, I draw strength from the symbols. I put them on my upper back/lower neck because I would not be able to see them with my own eyes. To me this heightens their effect; whatever it is.

Thoughts and Quotes:

A 'Realist' is just a rationalizing Pessimist.

Vanity maims the most handsome man.

I prefer bear dances to contests. At a dance everyone is on stage and everyone is beautiful.

Haiku

I let the waves pound,
crash against my back, so that
you would not get wet

Sanskrit poem

even the man who is happy glimpses something
or a thread of sound touches him

and his heart overflows with a longing
he does not recognize

then it must be that he is remembering
a place out of reach, people he loved

in a life before this
their pattern still there in him, waiting

Emotional pain = Physical pain

"The hypothesis is that the social attachment system that makes sure we don't stray too far from the group piggybacked onto the pain system to help our species survive. This suggests that the need to be accepted as part of a social group is as important to humans as avoiding other types of pain', she said. 'Just as an infant may learn to avoid fire by first being burned, humans may learn to stick together because rejection causes distress in the pain center of the brain', said Eisenberger. 'If it hurts to be separated from other people, then it will prevent us from straying too far from the social group,' she said."
